When we think of Bruce Lee, the first image that comes to mind is that iconic yellow jumpsuit from Game of Death and his explosive close-range power. But his life was so much more than that. This time, we set out for Seattle—the city deeply tied to his story—asking one question: Who was Bruce Lee? Here, we retrace how he studied, trained, found his philosophy, and spread his martial arts vision that continues to inspire today. Tim Pan (潘天鸿) and Mediastorm (影视飓风) make thier way into Seattle's CID with Han Eckelberg.

Jan. 1 may have come and gone, but the year is only just beginning by a different calendar. It's a mostly symbolic one, based on the monthly cycles of the moon's phases. According to that lunar calendar, the year isn't 2024, it's actually 4722. To usher in this Lunar New Year, you'll most likely see and hear a Lion Dance. Locally, you might catch the 50-year-old Mak Fai Dragon and Lion Dance Association. Mak Fai performs year-round, but demand skyrockets during this time, with everyone wanting to kick off the new year by kicking some bad spirit booty.

"Asian American History, Shared through Graphic Novels" by Nancy Joseph. Before the pandemic, students in UW professor Connie So’s Asian American History course had an idea. For the 150th anniversary of the Golden Spike ceremony, which marked the completion of American’s first transcontinental railroad, they wanted to create a film about the integral role of Chinese workers in the building of the railroad, told through the experience of a Chinese immigrant family.
The film was planned as a class project, to be completed in six weeks. No one involved could have imagined the project would later lead students to write and illustrate an ambitious trilogy of graphic novels, also known as comic novellas. The books, including one based on the class project, explore the impact of historic events on Seattle’s Asian American community.

"He’s a 10 but Doesn’t Know Bruce Lee Attended the UW" by International Examiner Frederick Lu. For decades, the UW had refused efforts to honor Lee, from denying permission to film Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story in 1993, to rejecting the Bruce Lee Garden in 2008. This installation is particularly important, amidst rising hate against Asian Americans and other people of color during the pandemic. As a current undergraduate student, it feels like an acknowledgment of the Asian American student body’s presence and the struggles we continually face.

"Asian and Pacific Islander UW students produce 'In a Yellow Tone', a comic novella about Asian Americans during WWII," By Roxanne Ray. When Duke Ellington wrote the song “In a Mellow Tone” in 1939, he never imagined that this tune dedicated to joy would be the foundation for a comic novella about the role played by Asian Americans during World War II. But In a Yellow Tone is the 222-page book of stories and illustrations developed by University of Washington students whose initial film production, about Chinese American World War II veterans who received Congressional Gold Medals in 2020, was interrupted in March 2020 by the COVID-19 pandemic.
