From the Southend Seal, to the Cleveland BROTHER and National jerseys, to AGE UP Stickers and Hoodies, these are my designs for the sport.
SOUTHEND ULTIMATE SEAL:
In middle school, my humanities and ultimate frisbee coach, Chris Quigly, emailed me if I would like to design a jersey for 6 schools, representing our community for the biggest Ultimate Frisbee state tournament, Spring Reign 2014. I said "I'm in."
I considered many design ideas from "incorporating power lines from Chief Sealth Trail," to "adding Seattle Skylines and 98118." It was a massive team effort, so for the first design, I offered using the school mascots in unison, playing off the qualities of each unique school and establishing a theme of unity in a "coat of arms" style. The response was awesome, and from each draft to the next, the feedback led to me adding school names, to ultimately encompassing the mascots within what I thought of as the SOUTHEND ULTIMATE Seal.
All the middle school mascots; Aki Kurose Peace Cranes, South Shore Sea Dragons, and Asa Mercer Mustangs, are in the horizontal direction. While the high school mascots; Cleveland Eagles, Franklin Quakers, and Rainier Beach Vikings, are aligned in the vertical direction. All 6 different jerseys, along with coaching staff jerseys, had my SOUTHEND ULTIMATE design. The jerseys were displayed at the Wing Luke Museum at Chinatown.
Cleveland Ultimate - BROTHER Jersey:
"Something simple, sharp, & symbolic!" This is what members from the Cleveland Ultimate Frisbee team wanted for their new jersey that 2016 season. They were statement makers, on and off the field, and wanted to make sure they showed what was important to them. Team captains organized a meeting with me as we sat and plotted what the jersey would look like. Instead of a traditional jersey with player names on the back, we would insert multiple languages creating the overall meaning "BROTHER," to represent the diversity and unity among the team/community. Other symbols such as the BLM fist, peace sign, and the #sayhername were also added as strong pieces of awareness and strength. Brother to brother, they represented Souf Seattle with pride!
Cleveland Ultimate - National Tournament Jersey:
With Cleveland Ultimate placing 2nd in States, the team was invited to play in the National Frisbee Tournament held in Chicago, IL. The overall theme for both jersey and warm-ups is based on the idea of "Origins," how we as a team are proud of where we come from and represent. The main jersey concept shows our school mascot carrying our hometown, Seattle, on our backs as we fly to Chicago.
In my first draft, I used the eagle feather indents to make the American Flag as a symbol of us going to the National tournament. However, with "political tension" rising in the election race at the time, we decided to return back to our "BROTHER" jersey color theme to reemphasize our teams ideals. The final draft shows an eagle silhouette in a "Naruto Run" position, built up by the Cascade mountain range and the Seattle skyline.
For warm-ups, the 60 metro bus in the front, and the cross-streets of Cleveland High School on the back. It gives thanks to our metro route and location of our school in South Seattle. Many of us are connected through this 60 route. My thought is that we must always recognize where we come from, for it is where we started as a team. We placed 7th in the Nation.
Next Stop: 36 SOUF:
Within our community, the 36 bus route and Ultimate Frisbee are one of many things that connect the Soufend together. Running from Downtown Seattle to the Othello neighborhood, this jersey captures the 36 bus route swerving to reach its home, the SOUF. Protecting the backs of the players is a guard dawg, inspired by the teams "pit bull mascot," who is sitting in the group picture down below. Other Frisbee symbols of the SOUF such as AGE UP and the Southend Seal accompany the jersey on its sleeves.
AGE UP - Metro Sticker Set and Hoodies:
After designing the "Next Stop: 36 SOUF" jersey for homies in the Soufend, All Girl Everything (AGE UP) wanted to further continue the design with a metro sticker set and hoodies. Now all the popular routes in the Soufend can be seen hustling to get us back home!
ORIGINS. UNITY. EMPOWERMENT.
Major themes within the Soufend Ultimate Frisbee teams and community. It's the Soufend way, it's the #spiritofthegame. Shout out to all the Frisbee players, middle school, high school, college, to even PRO, hustling and putting the Soufend on your back. We advance together.
